Election Judges

We are always looking for individuals to serve as a Monroe County Judge of Election. Election Judges serve a vital role in protecting the rights of voters.

All Election Judges have equal authority and responsibility in upholding the law. There is no head judge, therefore judges act as a Board in making decisions and the majority rules.

Responsibilities

• Ensuring that the electoral process is administered fairly and in accordance with Federal and State election laws
• Administering election procedures
• Maintaining order in the polling place on Election Day
• Ensuring proper and legal conduct of the election
• Upholding the Constitution of the United States and the State of Illinois

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship
• Be of good repute and character
• Be able to speak, read, and write the English language
• Be skilled in fundamental math
• Be of good understanding and capable
• Not be a candidate for any office in the election
• Not be an elected precinct committeeman
• Reside and be entitled to vote in the precinct where selected to serve as Judge

Selection

Election Judges are selected by the County Board from lists furnished by the Chairman of the County Central Committees of the Republican and Democrat parties.

After selections are made, a report is filed in the Circuit Court and an application is made for confirmation and appointment by the Circuit Court.

Training

Training courses are conducted during the period proceeding each scheduled election. The course covers:

• Duties and responsibilities of election judges
• Reading skills
• Ability to work with poll lists
• Basic math
• Knowledge of election laws governing the operation of polling places
